The purpose of this study was to quantify the benefits of bedside nurse shift
reporting. Given the inadequacies of past studies, a larger sample size was
utilized to enhance the statistical significance of the results.
Research Design A “quasi-experimental pre- and post-
implementation design was used (San-Jecklin &
Sherman, 2014, p. 2854).” This model was used
to determine a cause-and-effect relationship
between nurse bedside shift reporting and
multiple patient/family satisfaction indicators
along with an increase or decrease in patient
safety (San-Jecklin & Sherman, 2014).
Sample Selection 233 patients completed the ‘Patient Views on
Nursing Care’ survey at baseline (San-Jecklin &
Sherman, 2014). 157 patients completed the
three-month follow-up survey, and 154 patients
completed the 13-month follow-up survey (San-
Jecklin & Sherman, 2014). For patients, unable
to finish the questionnaire and as established in
the research protocols 70 patient family
members completed questionnaires at baseline
with 72 completing the three-month follow-up
survey and 53 completing the 13-month follow-
