Sponges (Phylum Porifera) are primitive, sessile, multicellular animals with a unique canal system for water circulation, which facilitates feeding, respiration, and waste removal. Their general features include a porous body wall, cellular-level organization, and an absence of true tissues and organs. The canal system, comprising pores (ostia), canals, flagellated chambers lined by choanocytes (collar cells), and a large opening (osculum), generates water currents. Water enters through the ostia, flows through the canals and chambers where food is captured by choanocytes, and exits via the osculum, carrying metabolic wastes.
