NUR 2214 / NUR2214 Nursing Care of the Older Adult Module Nine Overview | Latest 2020 / 2021 | Rasmussen College Overview Societal perceptions Society's attitude towards old age is influenced by ones experiences, cultural beliefs, and values. These perceptions are attributed to the individual’s life experiences, their age, their values, their educational background, their socioeconomic level and the overall cultural norm within one’s direct physical and social environment. Negative perceptions of individuals about aging leads to age discrimination in society Misconceptions about aging may result in missed inclusions and a lack of quality and responsiveness in care provisions and services. Eastern cultures tend to associate old age with that of strength, knowledge, wisdom and authority for example Western cultures tend to associate “old age” with frailty, less value, unattractive and poor productivity. • These negative perceptions are what shape societal views and leads many members of one’s society to perceive “old age” through a negative lens. • Ageism prompts the young to separate themselves physically and emotionally from the old and to view older adults as somehow having less human value. Terminology The term ageism “or age discrimination” is defined as different attitudes, stereotyping, prejudice, biases, actions, behaviors, and institutional arrangements against or in favor of an individual or group of people based on one’s age.
