Legal Ethical Principles and Standards for Professional Practice: Annotated Bibliography

ACA Code of Ethics:

I choose the ACA Code of Ethics as a resource for my paper due to it discussing
important aspects of the counseling profession, such as counseling relationships,
confidentiality, boundaries, and resolving ethical issues. This resource can be used to
support the portion of the paper that goes over legal and ethical issues in the counseling
profession. Legal ramifications can occur if the counselor does not follow the ACA Code
of Ethics. Therefore, it is imperative that the counselor have a good understanding of the
ACA Code of Ethics.
Confidentiality (Manhal):
I choose this resource due to it discussing both the legal and ethical issues that
surround confidentiality in the counseling profession. This resource will be helpful in the
second paragraph of my paper as it will support both legal and ethical issues surrounding
confidentiality. This resource also discusses in detail the legal exceptions of
confidentiality that includes child abuse, subpoenas, and other legal matters. (Manhal-
Baugus, 1996).
NAADAC:
This resource was chosen because it will provide details of the ethical and legal
codes that a counselor will be expected to follow. The NAADAC discusses diversity in
the code of ethics and it will help to support the paragraph of my paper that discusses
legal issues with discrimination and multicultural practice. This resource can also be
utilized in my second paragraph when discussing confidentiality and informed consent.
These issues are important for a counselor to know to avoid legal ramifications.
Ethical Issues (Scott):
This resource was chosen due to the discussion that it provides for the major ethical
issues in addiction and substance use counseling. This resource goes into detail about the
lack of agreement in regards to credentialing. This resource will support the second
paragraph of my paper when I begin the discussion of ethical issues of confidentiality and
the lack of agreement of credentialing for the professional practice of addiction and
substance use counseling.
Ethics in Counseling and Psychotherapy (Welfel):
This resource is the textbook for this class. It provides a lot of detail in regards to
the ethical and legal issues in addiction and substance use counseling. The textbook can
support all of the paragraphs of my paper. However, the third paragraph will go into
further detail of how a counselor can maintain legal and ethical boundaries when working
with clients in this field. This resource will also support my paper when writer describes
the impact a counselor can have on a client.
