Polly Higgins is one of the most inspiring figures of the green movement. She has made a
significant impact on the way that people and companies participate in environmental issues these
days. She attempted to introduce laws where companies and organizations are held liable for the
damage they have incurred on the ecosystem. Higgins created the legal term “Ecocide” and gave
up her high-paying job, so she could fight for this cause. Ecocide is the intentional damage to the
environment. Earlier proposals to implement similar legal instruments in the Rome Statute on
international crimes against humanity were dropped in 1996. For the past ten years, Higgins
worked to revive these ideas and has even written books about Ecocide.
Her decision is based on the fact that companies and organizations operate with the sole purpose
of increasing shareholder value regardless of the environmental consequences. There are many
companies these days that intentionally pollute or destroy the environment with impunity. Higgins
attempted to have a legal instrument, which would sanction these companies and organizations
whether it was unintentional or not.
