GERD: reflux of gastric contents into the esophagus Risk Factors: pregnancy, obesity, sleep apnea, NG tubes, meds anticholinergics, betablockers, bronchodilators, alcohol and smoking S/S: heartburn, epigastric pain, dyspepsia, regurgitation, pain and difficulty swallowing, hyper salivation Diagnostics: endoscopy, with biopsy and barium swallow Tx: small meals, sit upright while eating and for 1 hour after, weight loss, avoid hot/cold beverages, alcohol, caffeine, tobacco, don’t eat 2 hours before bedtime, avoid peppermint, chocolate, fried/fatty foods, carbonated drinks, anticholinergics and NSAIDs, increase fiber
