This notes aHere’s a short, simple paragraph: When you breathe normally, you take in about 500 mL of air, but during a deep breath you can inhale around 3000 mL more. As the lungs stretch during deep inspiration, a safety reflex called the Hering–Breuer reflex turns on. This reflex tells the brain’s DRG to stop the inhalation so the lungs don’t over-expand. Once the inhalation stops, the air naturally flows out again as the lungs relax.
