and Types of Analogies
Analogy
- is a comparison of two things to show their similarities.
Example:
Brewed coffee is to CUP as chicken soup is to BOWL.
Take note:
It's easy once we recognize the connection or relationship
between the first pair of words; we then simply apply this
understanding to the next pair. However, it can sometimes
be perplexing for others, especially if they have difficulty
discerning the link between the words mentioned. This is
precisely what an analogy is.
All analogies consist of four parts which bear a
relationship with one another. These can be:
• Words
• Numbers
• Short phrases
• Illustrations
Tip to find analogy relations easily:
• Read the analogy as a sentence.
• Express a relationship between the first two words. Then
substitute the third word for the first and figure out a suitable
substitute for the second word.
• Express a relationship between the first and the third words by
substituting the second word for the first and figuring out a suitable
substitute for the fourth word.
