What is STS (Science, Technology and Society)?
Science, technology and society focuses on the fundamental concepts that
explain how science and technology affect people’s lives and how society also
influences them. It means science, technology and society are connected –
they work together and affect each other every day.
After studying this, you should be able to explain how science and technology
help people and how they shape society, especially regarding their
development in the Philippines.
Introduction to STS
• Science – is derived from the Latin word “Scientia”, which means
“Knowledge”. It refers to the systematic way of understanding the
natural and social world through observation and evidence.
• Technology – comes from the Greek word “Techne”, meaning “Art”. It is
the practical application of scientific knowledge to create tools, systems
and solutions that address human needs.
• Society – is the “People”. It includes the people, cultures, values and
institutions that shape how science and technology are developed and
used.
Note: Society is different from Community. Society is a large group of people living
together with the same culture, while community is a smaller group of people within
the society.
Science discovers knowledge, technology uses that knowledge and society
decides how to use it.
