Interviews. One characteristic of interviews is the flexibility and openness of the data
collected. Another characteristic is the interaction between the person that has been
interviewed and the research, that usually helps building a rapport between them.
Types of interviews:
- Focus group (8-12). Small sample and last for a maximum of 2 hours.
- Survey. Collects a large amount of data in a short period of time.
Case studies. One characteristic is the small sample that is of 1 person. Another characteristic
is that this method utilizes a variety of methods for data collection.
Simple experiments. One characteristic is that they are usually conducted in laboratory
settings. Another characteristic is the presence of two conditions - experimental and control.
Field experiments. One characteristic is that they are conducted in real-life environments.
Another characteristic is there is less control over extraneous variables/there is less
ecological validity.
Quasi-experiments. One characteristic is that the sample is a pre-existing group of
participants based on a trait or behavior. Another characteristic is that there is less control of
IV manipulation.
Correlational studies. One characteristic is that when one variable changes, the other
changes as well. Another characteristic is that it shows the extent to which two factors or
variables are related.
Describe the sampling method used in the study.
Self-selected sampling. Participants are the ones that approach the researchers to volunteer
to participate in the study. Usually participants reply to some sort of advertisement or
marketing that calls for volunteers.
Opportunity sampling. This is when a pre-existing sample is used. It is an easy way to get
participants because they are readily available.
Random sampling. A sample in which everyone in the target population has the same
probability of being chosen. It is only possible to draw a simple random sample when every
member of the target population is accessible and identifiable to the researcher.
