CH 2 MICROORGANISMS:
FRIEND AND FOE
Living organisms around us which we
normally cannot see. These are called
MICROORGANIMS or MICROBES
Microorganisms are classified into four major
groups. These groups are bacteria, fungi,
protozoa, algae and viruses
Viruses are microorganisms but are different
from other microorganisms. They, however,
reproduce only inside the cell of the host
organism, which may be bacterium, plant or
animal.
Examples of viruses are common flu and cold
Microorganisms live in all types of
environment, ranging from ice cold climate to
hot springs; and deserts to marshy land.
They are also found inside the bodies of
animals including humans
, Microbes are used for various purposes.
They are used in preparation of curd, bread
and cake
They are also used in cleaning up in
environment
For example the organic wastes (vegetable
peel, remains of animals, faeces etc)
These are broken down into harmless and
usable substances by bacteria
They are used in making medicines
In increasing soil fertility by fixing nitrogen
Microbes making curd and bread:
Curd contains several microorganisms. Of
these, bacterium, LACTOBACILLUS promotes
the formation of curd
It multiplies in milk and converts it into curd
Bacteria are also involved in the making of
cheese, pickles and other food items
