Instant messaging(im)/texting: Realtime communication between two or more people
Social media: Consists of interactive websites where people and communities create user generated
content with friends, family peers and teh world.
Collaboration Tools: Give people the opportunity to work together on shared documents. Every
where on the planet.
Weblogs: webpages that are easy to update and edit. Are individual.
Wikis: are webpages that groups of people can edit and view together.
Peer-to-peer File sharing: sharing files without having to store and download them from a central
server.
Components of networking
Internet: is literally a collection of interconnected private and public networks.
Devices: routers, clients, servers, switches.
Media: Wiring, cabling.
Services: software
End devices: computers, printers, voip phones, security cams, smartphone.
Intermediary network devices: Network acces( switches and wireless acces points),
internetworking(routers),security(firewalls).
Network media: Metallic wires within cables, glass or plastic fibers, wireless transmission.
Network interface card: provides the physical connection to the network at the pc or server.
Physical port: a connector or outlet.
Interface: specialized ports on an internetworkin device that connect to individual networks.

Logical topology diagrams: identify devices, ports and ip addressing scheme.
Local area Network(LAN): A network infrastructure that provides access to users and end devices in

Wide Area Network(WAN): A network infrastructure that provides acces to other networks over a

Metropolitan Area Network(MAN): A network infrastructure that spans a physical area larger than a
LAN but smaller than a WAN.
Wireless LAN(WLAN): Similar to a LAN but wirelessly interconnects users and end points in a small
geographical area.
Storage Area Network(SAN): A network infrastructure designed to support file servers and provide
data storage, retrieval and replication.

(ICANN), Internet Arichitecture Board(IAB) plus many others: are organizations that purpose of
helping to maintain structure and standardization of internet protocols and processes.
Intranet: used to refer to a private connection of LANS and WANs that belongs to an organization
and is designed tob e accessible only by the organization.
Extranet: examples:
1. A company providing access to outside suppliers/contractors
2. A hospital providing a booking system to doctors so the can make appointments fort heir
patients.
