5.5.1 Judaism
The Jewish people lived in the Roman province Judea. They were monotheistic.
1. Abraham.
2. Jacob. Abraham's grandson. He led the Jews to Egypt where they ended up in slavery
by the Pharao.
3. Moses led the Jews to the promised land now called Israël
He fixed the relationship with God. The Jews had a special relationship with God. They were
the chosen people. Those stories are in the Jewish Torah and the Christian Old Testament. The
Romans conquered a lot of Judea. They destroyed many holy places. They were angry that
they didn't saw the emperor as a god. The Jews saw this as a punishment from God. The
Messiah would come and fix their relationship with God.
5.5.2 The rise of Christianity
Jezus of Nazareth was born around 4 BC. He was very wise and said there would be a better
time for the Jews. His Jewish followers thought he was the Messiah. His followers called
themself Christians. Many people didn’t think he was the Messiah. The Romans saw Jezus as
the start of rebellion. Urged by the Jewish priests Jezus was crucified by the Roman ruler of
Jezus. His followers (apostles) spread his teaching trough the empire and wrote about Jezus’
life in the New Testament. There was a place in heaven for you if you are a good person.
Christians believed:
- 1 God created the whole world.
- Jezus was the son of God
- A new agreement between God and the people was made after Jezus death.
After a while Christianity grow very big. Often women, slaves and soldiers joined, because
praying was free, and they might get into heaven. The followers travelled to cities with a lot of
trade. That’s how the Chistian believe spread across the empire.
5.5.3 Persecution and state religion
The Romans saw the Christians as a danger. They wanted them to see the emperor as a god.
Because they won't do this get persecuted and were forced to leave the country. Tree
emperors changed this.
- Trajan reduced the persecution of Christians in the 2 century AD
- Constantine claimed he had won a war thanks to the Christian god and converted to
Christianity and many rich Romans followed his example. In AD 312
- Theodosius made Christianity the state religion in AD 394. From now Roman gods are
forbidden
6.2.1 From empire to empire
The migration Period started in 400 AD. Western Europe was now taking over by the Franks,
Saxons, Jutes, Vandals, Goths and Angles. In 481 AD Clovis became king of the Franks, he was
a Christian, with him as king Francia became the strongest. It fell apart because of the
tradition that Clovis divided his kingdom over its 4 sons in 511. In 768 Charlemagne became
king of the Franks. He conquered many lands and tried to convert them to Christianity. He
was supported by the clergy, the now highest class in the medieval society. In 795 Leo |||
became pope he was (even physically) attacked. He came to Charlemagne and asked for
help. Charlemagne made peace and was crowned the emperor of the Roman empire in 800.
400 years after the fall of Rome, it became an empire again.
